Commissions Are Equal Parts Communication & Commitment

Dale Konow - Kono Designs ArizonaOpen communication is the basis for a commissioned piece. At the heart of the dialogue is the aesthetic foundation of the project, the stylistic approach to each creative venture.

As the client you become a part of the design process. The details of a “work in progress” begin with your visualization of a hand crafted work of wood. Primary to the design process is expressing how the work will contribute to the quality of your life, serving as either a functional or purely visual element in your world.

Discussions during the planning process can take place in person, by phone or by e-mail but as the client your input is imperative. From this one-on-one contact I begin the project with detailed sketches for your approval. The scope of this planning stage includes concurrence on both materials and labor costs of execution. At the onset of the project the price of the work is agreed upon.

A contractual agreement serves as a “handshake” that allows both the client and myself peace of mind. I charge a 10% fee for the initial sketches. This is a payment in good faith for the effort involved in preparation of the commissioned work and is applied towards the total cost. With your final approval of the sketches a timeline is established and a financial commitment is made with a 50% deposit. The balance of the payment is collected when the work is completed. Delivery and any installation cost is a separate fee.

I strive to keep the collaboration with my clients fresh throughout the working stages of the commission. I will keep in contact with photographs and updates via e-mail. Input from the client is graciously accepted and refinements can be made.

Ultimately the delivery of your woodworking piece is the fulfillment of the creative process. You are presented with an exceptional work of fine craftsmanship intended to give you pleasure for a lifetime.
